Here’s a link to my notes from the Launch Strong, Church Planters Roundtable on October 25, 2011- hosted at Westwood Baptist Church:

The topic was leadership development. Mac Lake (Chief Launch Officer of Launch) led the session. He said remembers his first “leadership development wake-up call.” He took his first job at a church after seminary. Was looking into the job description and found out that he did everything. He led worship on Sunday morning, oversaw kids, made the slides for the music, planned the music…
When he finally went on vacation, he realized that he would probably get fired. He had so many balls in the air that they were going to have to crash when he was away. The lack of leadership development would become obvious. That night, on vacation, he wrote the names of everyone who reported to him. There were 88 names- Sunday school teachers who couldn’t make it. Musicians who needed sheet music. People who couldn’t teach their class. So, he drew 7 circles and identified 7 leaders, thereby dividing everything among them. He made the transition to start leading through people.
Here’s a critical idea: you must stop simply “leading people” and you must grow to “leading through people.”
